Many people are very familiar with the topic of heroin substance abuse. If you aren’t aware of how widespread this problem is here are a few statistics for you. The World Health Organization estimates that there are over 9 million people addicted to heroin at any given time.
Heroin is made from opium which is gathered from the poppy flower. As with all derivatives made from the poppy flower, heroin is an extremely dangerous and very powerful analgesic drug. When it comes to opiates in general there are around 13 million people abusing them worldwide when you consider that 9 million of that 13 million are actually Heroin substance abusers you realize how widespread the problem really is.
Whereas previously heroin and other opiate substances were a commonly made in other parts of the world, especially the Golden triangle in Southeast Asia, it is now estimated in that combining amounts from the United States and Europe, heroin production has more than tripled since the early 1980s. What this means is that rather than heroin abuse becoming less common it is actually becoming more widespread as every year goes by.
Drug abuse does not only just heard the person who is addicted, but it also hurts everyone around them; their friends, relatives and family. The damage done to the person addicted to heroin is usually more along the lines of physical damages. It’s very harmful for their health to be addicted to heroin and it can affect many different areas of the body. Usually those most affected by the heroin addict’s actions are hurt more in an emotional way as opposed to a physical way.
Commonly heroin addicts will steal money from people when they need a fix, if they don’t have enough money to buy it for themselves. In many cases that means they are stealing from their own family, and this also causes a lot of distress on the part of those living with an addict.
Unless something is done fairly soon to alleviate this problem it seems that we will be facing continuing problems with heroin addiction abuse. It seems the best place to start is to provide heroin help people overcome their addictions and to also somehow stop the production of heroin.
