The fear of driving is not a disease but a condition. This means that it is a feeling manifested in a patient’s head that makes it difficult for them to act natural and in most cases exhibit involuntary physical and psychological symptoms. Although it is normal for everyone to experience fear while driving at one point or another, people suffering from panic attacks when driving have serious problems because their fears are frequent and more severe. This is a momentary and situational condition that can be overcome through self-help techniques coupled with self-determination and emotional assistance. Different people experience panic attacks under different situations including driving at night or in foggy conditions, in heavy traffic, over high bridges, in tunnels, on highways and freeways and through intersections among others.

Some characteristics of driving anxiety attacks include sweating, racing heartbeats, hyperventilation, feeling of losing control, stomach and chest pains, soreness of the throat and shaking among others. There are several effective ways on how to get rid of driving fears but taking anti-anxiety and anti-depressant pills is not among them. Most people are used to medicinal remedies but they only serve to alleviate the symptoms of the attacks and not to deal with the actual problem. First, evaluate and analyze the real cause of the problem and identify the potential reasons of the fears.

Make yourself comfortable in the car as the next step to treat this condition. Always focus on something else like your destination in order not to leave room for the “what if’s” that often cause the attacks. During early stages of battling panic attacks, you can drive with a friend who can help you maintain focus or stay occupied to leave no room for negative thoughts and emotions that manifest to become panic attacks. The process of getting rid of these fears is gradual but eventually, it is possible to drive anxiety free.
