A lot of my friends will use the excuse that having a family and children to take care of prevents them from going to the gym and staying fit. While I know that raising kids can be quite an undertaking, there are so many ways to still stay healthy while having fun with your kids. Instead of spending that extra hour watching TV, play a home gym sport together instead.
There are several sports that you can play together at home or at nearby courts and rinks. One of the most popular is basketball. You can either find community courts in your town, or you can buy a backboard with a hoop and put it up on your garage. When I was young, playing basketball with my dad was one of my favorite things.
If you do have a backyard or a park nearby, there are a plethora of sports you can try out, and be creative with it. If you have a Frisbee, try playing a game of frisbee golf. You can get kits for fun backyard games like horseshoes, bocce ball, lawn darts, badminton or a variety of other games. It may not even seem like exercise, but it has you on your feet moving around instead of sitting and watching television. Even something simple as a game of catch with a baseball and mitts or a football is great exercise.
If you have a pool, there are a bunch more games to play. The classic marco polo is always fun and if you have a net from your badminton kit, set it up as a water volleyball net. Because of the resistance of the water, this can actually be a phenomenal workout.
I always tell my friend to stop using her kids as an excuse for being unhealthy and use them to make you want to become healthier. She finally took my advice and not only is she in much better shape, her kids are feeling really great and sleeping much better at night from all the extra activity. So why not add a sport or two to your life?
