Ectopic Pregnancies always result in the loss of the fetus, but what’s more, they can endanger the life of the mother or even result in death. Ectopic pregnancy symptoms start off the same as the normal symptoms of pregnancy and do not indicate there is anything out of the ordinary until about six weeks into the pregnancy. Sometimes, there will be no indication of an ectopic pregnancy or even that the mother is pregnant. But usually the mother will know something is amiss if she experiences vaginal bleeding or pain during intercourse. Pain in one side of the abdominal region or pelvis that spread is also another sign of a likely ectopic pregnancy. And shoulder pain is one of the hallmark signs of internal bleeding caused by an egg implanting in the fallopian tube. Sometimes, shock can also indicate that internal bleeding is occurring. In any of these cases, immediate medical attention should be sought. The fetus growing outside the uterus may have already caused a fallopian tube to rupture, causing internal bleeding which is life threatening and requires surgery.
An ectopic pregnancy can happen to any woman, but there are certain women who are more likely to have one. These include women above the age of 35. Women who have already had an ectopic pregnancy are unfortunately also more likely to have another one. Irregularities or scarring in the fallopian tubes can also cause the egg to implant there, resulting in the pregnancy becoming ectopic.
There is the chance that an ectopic pregnancy will resolve itself, leaving the body with vaginal bleeding. This is natural and the woman may not even know she was pregnant. It is the cases where the fetus continues to grow that one needs to be concerned. A woman experiencing any ectopic pregnancy symptoms should get checked out right away, and will have some options in addition to surgery for how to deal with it.
