Maternity bras are an unavoidable expense when it comes to pregnancy and is not an area in which to try and save money. It is vital that you are wearing a well fitting bra throughout your pregnancy in order to support your growing breasts, preventing pain and possible damage due to stretching of breast tissues and excess pressure in certain points.

It is probably that you will need at least two different sizes of maternity bra during your pregnancy, but how do you know when it’s time to ditch your existing bra and move up a size or shop for a new style?

The easiest way to tell is to pay attention to how your current bra is fitting and as soon as it becomes uncomfortable or starts looking too small, you know it is time to be refitted. Your breasts will grow very quickly from early on in pregnancy and will continue to grow until after you have your baby and your milk comes in. Don’t be tempted to go on wearing an ill-fitting bra to save money as this could result in you feeling very uncomfortable.

Another reason you may choose to buy a new bra is if you need a different type of bra. Browsing through maternity bras online will show you how many different styles there are out there. If sleeping braless is becoming uncomfortable, you may want to invest in a sleep bra which provides some support when you’re in bed. Or maybe you want a more supportive bra for doing yoga or some other type of exercise.

A couple of weeks before your baby is due to be born, you will also need to shop for a nursing bra. Nursing bras provide similar support to maternity bras but the cups are easily unclipped for breast feeding. Try to buy this type of bra as late in your pregnancy as possible so you can be sure that your breasts will not grow much more before your baby is born.
