Common symptoms associated with heartburn are chest pain, bitter taste in the throat, and difficulty swallowing. You may experience heartburn at one point, and you may think you are having a heart attack. But don’t discount the possibility that it is indeed a heart attack since their symptoms are highly interchangeable. If the heartburn doesn’t subside in a couple of minutes, see a doctor right away for proper medical intervention.

An effective heartburn relief is papaya. You can find papaya fruits in your local stores, and they make a good ingredient for your meals. Papaya helps prevent indigestion, which in a way reduces your tendency to develop heartburn. In fact, when you eat papaya during your meals, you are less likely to experience heartburn than when you avoid having a papaya diet altogether. There is also chewable papaya tablets that can help relieve symptoms in a matter of minutes.

Don’t go straight to bed after eating. Lying down is a position that may cause your stomach acids to easily climb through your throat. If you need to lie down because you are feeling dizzy or weak, make sure that your head is raised about nine inches. You can insert a wood block under the head of your bed or put hard pillows underneath.

There are other free heartburn remedies or tips that you can observe, and the best of them is to avoid overeating. When your stomach is full, the small valve connecting your esophagus and stomach weakens and allows acids to transfer easily. Eat in smaller doses as opposed to eating larger amounts of food all at once. Also, avoid wearing tight clothes as they can put pressure on this valve. Keep your body weight fit and trim so that your digestive system can operate smoothly.

This muscle is called, Lower Esophageal Sphincter (LES) whose function is to control the reflux of material from the stomach back to the esophagus. The stomach produces hydrochloric acid that is used to breakdown food particles during the digestion process. The stomach has a mucous lining that protects the stomach from getting damaged by the acids, which the esophagus doesn’t. When the acid successfully refluxes back into the esophagus, a burning pain is felt close to the heart, thus this symptom is called heart burn. In truth, this condition has nothing to do with the heart.

Suppressing acid reflux is the main focus in nearly all cures for heartburn. The treatment applied is aimed at reducing the acids and strengthening the muscles in the esophagus, intestines and stomach, with particular emphasis on the esophageal sphincter.

Many cases of acid reflux are results of the type of diet one maintains. Spicy food eaten on a continuous basis, for example can lead to this condition. Most cases of acid reflux can be treated through a lifestyle change involving diet or through over the counter drugs such as antacids.

For those people who suffer moderate to severe cases of acid reflux can be treated using a variety of stronger medication. There have been debates on the process for treating such cases using a two step methodology. The two sides to the debate are whether using a Step Up or Step Down method is more effective over the other.

A step up approach is to use a less potent drug such as H2 blockers. These drugs are aimed at reducing the secretion of gastric acids by cells in the stomach. Most H2 blockers are non prescriptive and can be purchased over the counter. If the drug is not effective, a step up to a more powerful drug such as proton pump inhibitors can be prescribed.

The step down methodology is to start treatment using the stronger proton pump inhibitor. If no symptoms recur over a period of two to three months, the medication is brought down to a less potent H2 blocker. If no symptoms recur then the drug is completely stopped.

Either way, when there is no relief from GERD despite above efforts, it is imperative that one consult with a gastroenterologist who may conduct further studies including an endoscopy. It is highly possible that the source of the reflux is not caused by gastric acids; rather it may be another type of condition caused by other material such as bile. It is also a way to make sure that the right type of medicine specific to your condition is used.

Although there are many over the counter medications for acid reflux, it is still best to treat this or any type of condition for that matter using the natural approach. So, how to treat acid reflux naturally? Well, read on further and find out!

1.)	It has been said that there are certain foods that can lead to the development of this condition. With that in mind, it would be best for you to make yourself a food diary wherein you can record all of the food items and beverages you consume on a day to day basis. By doing so, you can single out the type of foods or beverages that are triggering your acid reflux. Once you have that taken care of, refrain from consuming such food/s for the time being and see what happens.

2.)	You also need to chew your foods thoroughly, so it would be easier for your stomach to digest the foods you consume.

3.)	Avoid eating large servings, especially at night. As a suggestion, eat smaller, but frequent meals all throughout the day.

4.)	Fried & fatty foods, sugary foods, citric fruits, spicy foods should be removed from your everyday diet.

5.)	If you are a smoker, then it is high time you quit. It is also important that you refrain from consuming alcoholic beverages.

6.)	Herbs are great remedy for acid reflux. Some of which are Aloe Vera, ragweed, flaxseeds, chamomile, slippery elm, red raspberry to name a few. These are great since they promote healing of your damaged stomach muscle tissues.

7.)	Food items that you need to incorporate in your daily meals are spinach, cabbage, soy milk, cucumber, potato, yogurt, soy milk, avocado, honey, rice or barley, tofu, banana, seaweeds, oats, plenty of soups, goats milk produce, chlorophyll enriched foods to name a few.
